Sleepy Hollow's season two began as our heroes were released from their respective "prisons", then introduced to the new kids on the block, Sheriff Reyes and Nick Hawley. Though there have been bits and pieces of the apocalyptic mythology embedded within each episode, we had yet to see a solid, straight 'End of Days' installment. Hold on to that safety bar Sleepyheads, we have reached the top of the roller-coaster and "Deliverance" will take you on a ride of epic proportions!
Those that are "Ichatrina" fans will be taken on a journey of pure adoration for the couple, but also be reminded why we love Ichabod so much! The lengths that he goes to help his wife, even after all the lies, is nothing short of unconditional love. Though the two have been apart for centuries, it is clear to see how devoted they are to each other, no matter what is thrown in their path. Not only will the couple face an extraordinary circumstance, but Ichabbie comes to a crossroads of sorts where they will be tested like never before,
The episode further explores Henry's allegiance, even as his father attempts to reach the humanity within him. It also reveals a part of his past that surprises Ichabod, which only fuels his desire to push his son towards redemption. Question is, will Henry allow this side of him to be ignited? How loyal is he to Moloch who rose him from the grave, only to realize the love he seeks will never be found in the monster? And what about Abraham? If there's a road to redemption for Henry, the Horseman of War, can the Horseman of Death be saved too? This week it's made abundantly clear that Abraham has no knowledge of Henry's plans for Katrina. In addition, his love for her is very strong and she actually does call out for his help when things escalate with Henry. Is it possible that Katrina really does love Abraham, though she married Ichabod? Can she be in love with both men? It all remains to be seen!
While there are a couple of light moments, the episode provides another opportunity for character development, as well as a little pay off with a few of our questions finally being answered. Watching this episode is reminiscent of the finale to a certain extent. It's incredibly well written and acted. Katia Winter shines like never before and Tom Mison's scene with John Noble is nothing short of brilliant, definitely Emmy-worthy, proving once again how fabulously talented they are. Nichole Beharie's performance also delivered, conveying a real struggle within Abbie as a tough decision is discussed with Ichabod. She's sort of between a rock and a hard place, trying to walk the line of being there for her partner, while keeping their mission to stop the apocalypse center stage. How do you tell Ichabod he may need to sacrifice either his wife or son for the greater good of mankind? It's a slippery slope.
Miscellaneous Scraps
Sheriff Reyes has been a thorn in Ichabbie's side, making no bones about her disdain for Ichabod; however, looks like she'll finally see the light, so I'm expecting smoother roads for Ichabbie going forward. Unfortunately our girl Jenny not in this episode, nor is our strapping bounty hunter Hawley, but the action is so intense your heart will be pumping a mile a minute and you won't have time to miss them! In a light moment, as previously reported, Ichabod will see 21st century voting in action when Abbie takes him to the polls. His outrage at the low number of Americans using their God-given right to vote doesn't escape the man who fought so hard for our liberties. I love that Abbie points out that in his time, she wouldn't have been able to vote- either as a woman, as someone who doesn't own property, or as an African-American! It's nice to see how far our country has come and I think it's very responsible for the writers to include historical facts, one of the reasons I love the show so much!
All I can say is at the end of this roller-coaster ride, fans will feel like they've just run a marathon, with a better understanding of the Crane's, Henry and even Abraham Van Brundt! For me, "Deliverance" is the most intense, edge-of-your-seat, heart-stopping, terrifying, thrilling episode this season and will have fans screaming at their screens!
