While the episode begins with the Crane's introduction to reality television a la The Bachelor, things quickly turn upon Abbie's (Nichole Beharie) arrival to the cabin, focused on the mission to stop Henry (John Noble) at all costs. She is met with Katrina's (Katia Winter) unwillingness to believe her son is lost cause, though Ichabod (Tom Mison) greatly struggles between his duty as a witness and as Henry's father. In last week's episode "Deliverance", it was incredulous that the Crane's voted against Abbie in favor of asking Henry to remove baby Moloch from Katrina's womb. This week, yet again Katrina refuses to give up on her child. My favorite moment is when Abbie finally confronts Katrina, reminding her that she and Ichabod were working together long before her arrival and as witnesses, must do what is necessary to stop Henry.
The Succubus
What exactly is a Succubus? It's a demon or supernatural entity that takes form as a beautiful woman to seduce men. She is a seductress, enchantress, with the ability to use her sexuality to feed on men with deep sexual desires.
In this episode Henry conjures a seductress for the sole purpose of "feeding" baby Moloch. Caroline Ford guest stars as the entity who sucks the souls from men after seducing them. What's interesting is that this Succubus isn't discriminatory and actually goes after men, as well as women, who have deep desire for another.
The Hawley Factor
Ever since bounty hunter Nick Hawley (Matt Barr) hit Sleepy Hollow, I've wondered exactly what exactly his deal is, where his loyalties lie and is he truly just out for himself? It's obvious he has the hots for "Lieuftenent", however this character is underdeveloped at this point.
In this episode he becomes the object of the Succubus's attention, saved after Ichabod and Abbie arrive on the scene. For me, while I'm fairly certain he was brought on as a love interest for our girl, I'm not sure it will work. He's definitely "eye candy" for the ladies, but was I concerned that the Succubus was about to suck the soul right out of him? Not really because as a viewer I'm not emotionally invested in him yet. Although I see a small spark of chemistry between the two, I take issue with the fact that he's already been with Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood), who seems much better suited for him.
On the other side of the coin, we saw Abbie struggling in this new dynamic of working with Katrina and Ichabod. There were several moments when you could feel the tension between them, the awkwardness as she kept the gang on task. I loved when she rolled her eyes at having to "protect" Katrina while Ichabod and Hawley tried to locate the Succubus.
I think it was hard for Katrina to see her husband working so effortlessly with Abbie as they tracked down the demon femme fatale. The duo has a rhythm, a way of working as a team and for me, I saw the strain between Katrina and Abbie as a hindrance. I did like that we saw her use magic, as well as her knowledge of it, so I can see how valuable she is to whichever side she's on. I love how attentive Ichabod is with Katrina, though she always appears to be in distress for one reason or another, which is also becoming a hindrance to a certain extent. I feel that Abbie has been trying to cope with Ichabod's situation, even going to Hawley to try and find answers (or a new partner?), which was futile.
Ever since Corbin (Clancy Brown) was killed, Abbie and Ichabod have been so intertwined as the two witnesses united, their mission clear. This season Abbie has had to pull Ichabod's focus from his wife and son, to their mission numerous times. She's grappled with how to approach the sticky
situation and deep down, I think she knows Ichabod fears losing his family. This is why I feel she's been so patient. I'm sure the time to choose between his duties as a witness and his family is coming, which is why we've had to see him side with Katrina. He's internally at war with himself, which is what the Succubus could see.
As Ichabod's internal struggle about Katrina and Henry continues, I believe the Succubus hit upon something he didn't expect...his feelings for Abbie. I kept waiting for her to confront Ichabod and there are a couple of ways to interpret what she says to him.
A Succubus has always been a sexual entity, preying on men's deep, unspoken desires, so when she revealed a hidden secret desire I believe it's because his love for Katrina has diminished, and feelings for Abbie are slowly bubbling to the surface. However, some fans think the deep secret he holds is not for desire in a sexual way, but his feelings about Henry. We all know he's between a rock and a hard place- Katrina and Abbie, with regards to fully going after his son. Is this the "secret desire" the Succubus sees? I'm going to say no, not based on the individuals she specifically targeted during the episode.
1. At "Twerk" her first victim was a geek with lust for a girl he was afraid to ask to dance.
2. Her second victim was a woman who had a desire for her best friend
3. Her almost third victim has the hots for Abbie
While some argue that Ichabod's reading was cerebral because she didn't "touch" him sexually, she was advancing towards him with every intention of doing so. She is an enchantress after all, with her sights set on those with hidden sexual desires. Upon realizing Hawley has designs on Abbie, Ichabod appears uncomfortable about the revelation. As a few fans pointed out, they felt Ichabod's questioning of Hawley's intentions with Abbie was more like a relative wanting to "protect" her. In the conversation Ichabod had with Abbie, I felt he was trying to find out if she has feelings for Hawley. Abbie and Ichabod have a deep connection, a level of trust that Katrina has broken with him. He is a very noble, honest man that holds trust to be almost sacred. I think Hawley's attraction makes Ichabod nervous. One of the lighter moments of the episode was when Abbie and Ichabod were chatting at the cabin about "macking on a lady". She reached out and put her hand on his leg, which he noticed! Am I reading too much into things? Only time will tell!
Let's talk about Ichabod and Hawley, the "bromance" that both have been forced into thanks to their connection to Abbie. I love when Ichabod notices Hawley pining for Abbie. He makes it a point to say Hawley's debt to her is done now that she saved his life. He seems a little unnerved by Hawley's attraction to her, so much that he has a conversation with her about it. Though he appears to give his approval, hearing that Abbie feels opening her heart leads to complications is a surprise to him. Would she be able to open her heart to Ichabod easier because of their mission together and complete trust they have in each other? How will Ichabod handle being the "third wheel" should Abbie and Hawley decide to take the relationship plunge? Just a little food for thought...
Katrina's Role
"Love can be a very dangerous weapon", Katrina tells Abbie at the end of the episode, as she plans to reconnect with Abraham in hopes of killing baby Moloch. However, what were her real reasons for returning to Abraham? Does she have feelings for him or is she simply bowing out as the "third wheel" to pave the way for the two witnesses to carry on?
What is painfully clear, as Ichabod says himself, "Katrina's heart has always been deep and mysterious, a fact that she has used to her advantage." Some fans believe that Ichabod was actually Katrina's "assignment", to keep the witness close to her. She was clearly flirting with him in "Weeping Lady", though engaged to Abraham at the time. Remember, she knew Ichabod was a witness way before he realized it upon awaking in the 21st century. One of the most poignant moments was when he says to Katrina, "It pained me to think you were not who I knew. A witch, a spy they are apart of who you are and secrecy is a hard habit to break." It is a very hard habit to break. Can she be trusted moving forward? Is this the beginning of the end of her alliance with Ichabbie? Will Ichabod's faith in her, as well as a possible redemption for his son really come to fruition?
In my view, it's very difficult to determine where exactly her heart truly lies. She obviously made a
connection with Abraham during her capture and I believe that necklace has infected her, much like baby Moloch had. Enchanted, the necklace has given her the ability to see Abraham and now, a baby where a monster lies. I think the necklace has been the reason she refuses to let go of Henry, as well as connection to the baby. Is she truly being manipulated completely? How much of the necklace's power factored into her decision to go back to Abraham? It still remains to be seen.
When all is said and done ultimately, as Ichabod has said several times, only Ichabbie can take this journey. Relationships change, especially during war and yes, that relationship must grow too. Ichabod has changed, is definitely not the same man he was 250 years ago. He's been catapulted into the 21st century, and as Katrina pointed out "has moved on with his life, with Abbie at his side". Will Ichabod be able to put aside the hurt he felt due to Katrina's lies and truly trust her? He desperately wants to, with all his heart, but as the Succubus pointed out his heart has doubts.
My prediction is that Katrina will turn on Ichabbie, join Henry and protect baby Moloch! Am I right? You'll just have to keep tuning in on Mondays at 9 pm on FOX!
