TV: Fans Weigh In On 'Sleepy Hollow' Season Two...

Last season Sleepy Hollow  was FOX's hit of the year, garnering staggering ratings in its freshman year, as 24 had in 2001 upon its premiere.  It was such a success in fact, that the network immediately gave the green light for season two after only airing three episodes!

A story of two witnesses coming together to stop the Apocalypse kept the audience captivated, in a frenzy and eager to see the mystery unfold.  Every week Ichabod (Tom Mison) and Abbie's (Nichole Beharie) journey continued to intensify until the mind-blowing season finale! Henry Parrish (John Noble) was not only revealed as the Horseman of War, but also Ichabod and Katrina's (Katia Winter) son!  The plot explosion rocked twitter like never before, and fans quickly uploaded videos of themselves watching the epic moment on YouTube.  I'd say it was the best kept secret in television history!  Such fun for Sleepyheads who proudly donned their label with pride.  I am one of those Sleepyheads!

Ever since the first episode, I have been riveted by Sleepy Hollow, the show that once again made it fun to immerse in American history and embrace a mythology driven series.

A man awakens 250 years after his Wiccan wife casts a spell on him, tied to the Horseman of Death after beheading the Hessian soldier on orders of General George Washington, during the Revolutionary War. Who would buy into such malarchy right? But the absurdity of it and talents of the cast to convey it as reality, made us believe anything is possible!

I was glued to the television the moment it aired, which is rare for me as I tend to multi-task while "watching" shows.  This one had me from the first gun shot in 1781's Hudson Bay battle between British and American soldiers. The instant I laid eyes on the horseman that would find himself
headless at the hands of Ichabod Crane, I was hooked!  Of course I must admit that seeing Tom Mison as Ichabod didn't hurt either! LOL

So what exactly has happened to the show heard 'round the world?  Ever since season two began, ratings have continued to decline, while passionate fans clamor we want the Sleepy Hollow from season one!  What exactly is it about season one that is so vastly different than season two?  How could the powers that be have miscalculated the next part of the story so much, that a twitter campaign designed to express our disdain at the direction of our female characters was necessary?  Can it be fixed or will FOX abandon the beloved series prematurely thanks to the ratings game?

Before I delve into the possible reasons for the decline of Sleepy Hollow's ratings, here's a little background as to the current state of the ratings game.

This week according to TV By The Numbers, the show gained a point from last week's 1.5 to a 1.6 share in the all important 18-49 demographic, with a 4.8 after live and same day totals were calculated.  For those who may not understand all that jargon, basically shows from each network are broken down into categories such as percentages of the total, average and cumulative audiences.  Initially launched for television in 1950, times have drastically changed in the 21st century as the world has made the leap to the internet, with limitless content to view via television, desktops, laptops and mobile devices.  The days of three major networks is long gone, viewing habits have drastically changed, however Nielsen ratings have not rolled with times.  According to an article by Megan Clarken, Nielsen is finally catching on they need a new system capable of accurately calculating a true rating.

So how does this affect Sleepy Hollow?  Simply put, the audience is exponentially higher than what

Nielsen can determine because their system is so antiquated.  At this point, network executives and marketing is looking at many other factors to determine exactly who, where, when and how audiences are watching their favorite shows. Social Media platforms are becoming a huge factor in the ratings game as advertisers and networks realize how vast, as well as critical it is to ascertain audience viewing numbers and habits.

Another aspect that factors into the production of the show itself is sponsorship.  The advertisers pick and choose which shows they want to buy commercial time for and it is a crucial part of the puzzle.  The 18-49 yo demographic, which I call the "golden demo", is the audience sponsors mostly target.  If the show's demographics go down, so will support by sponsors.

To combat this issue with regards to Sleepy Hollow, fans have begun the "Thank Sleepy Sponsors" campaign, designed to show our appreciation they chose to advertise during Sleepy Hollow.  Will it help in the long run? Absolutely! Sponsors love the positive message associated with their products, as well as free advertising straight from consumers via social media.

Now, about Sleepy Hollow...

For my part, I can only describe what I see and hear via social media platforms during, as well as after each episode airs.  This is my assessment of the situation...

In my opinion, "And the Abyss Gazes Back", "Weeping Lady", "Heartless" and "Mama" represent exactly what the show used to be in season one. All three episodes have great character development, a clear back story, answers questions and raises important new ones.

The premise of Sleepy Hollow: The arrival of the four horsemen signals the start of the Apocalypse as foretold in the bible.  In Revelations, it speaks of two witnesses brought forth for a period of seven years, sent to stop the "End of Days".  The Horseman of Death, whom we later learn is Ichabod's ex-bestie Abraham Van Brundt (Neil Jackson), has risen.  In the pilot episode Ichabod and Abbie realize they are the two witnesses prophesied.

In episode two of season one, "Blood Moon", Katrina appears to Ichabod in a dream and tells him the Horseman of Death has risen.  "But now he's returned to gather the others and together, they will unleash the Apocalypse.  Before the four horsemen can ride, an army of evil will make way for their arrival."

What does this mean?  I took it to mean that our witnesses would have to battle otherworldly supernatural creatures to ensure the horsemen's inability to enter our world.  Henry has brought forth many evil beings the witnesses have defeated this season, including the Pied Piper, Wendigo, Succubus, Weeping Lady.

So who is Moloch (Derek Mears) and what's his deal?  Abbie and her sister Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) were walking through the woods after school and came across four white trees, then actually observed Moloch rise the Horseman of War out of the ground.  Though Abbie is a Witness, she was too young to stop Moloch.

It is my understanding that Moloch could not rise until the four horsemen arrived.  Am I wrong on this?  In "Deliverance", Abbie found an entry that spoke of the Horrid King, who turns out to be Moloch.  "Who first, who last, who used the blood of sacrifice of parent's tears" to make his entry into this world.  So my question becomes, are the other two horsemen, the Horseman of Pestilence and Horseman of Famine already here, allowing Moloch's entry via Katrina? Is the Horrid King also one of the Horsemen Akeda3of the Apocalypse?  This hasn't been made clear at this point and it kind of contradicts the original plot.  I'm a little stumped by this.

One of the most important things for me when I invest in a show as much as I have Sleepy Hollow, is that the writers know exactly where they're going each season. They must know everything because fans who love the show, really dissect each episode, the meaning of everything, how it all connects. Examples are character development, knowing characters inside and out, their back stories, having a clear picture of how the season will unfold. Without these a show like Sleepy Hollow just crumbles. The reason season one was so successful, in my opinion, is because it was very detailed, from episode one to episode thirteen and took viewers on an epic journey, with a big reveal that rocked television! It was very well-thought out, planned and executed!

As an example of what I'm talking about, I actually went back and read one of my reviews, "Vessel" from season one, the famous skinny jeans episode. That episode specifically tied everything back to the witnesses- Washington's Bible, Moloch's fight to get it at all costs, our heroes doing whatever it took to save Irving's daughter Macy. It was a very powerful, well-written and crafted episode that clearly tied back to the apocalyptic mythology.

In my opinion, the first two episodes of this season were fantastic and had everything fans love- suspense, humor, mixed with horror.  I feel that the change in the dynamic of the original team ie: Ichabod, Abbie, Jenny and Irving (Orlando Jones) affected the show. Ichabbie have a rhythm, a way of working together that adding Katrina into the mix disrupted. Also adding new character Nick Hawley (Matt Barr) into the group has marginalized Jenny's role this season.  The audience loves the Mills sisters, clearly evidenced by the rejoice that arose across social media platforms after "Mama" aired.

Another issue of contention among the fans is Irving being sideline the first half of the season, stuck at Tarrytown Psychiatric. There is a chemistry so-to-speak with the combination of Abbie, Ichabod, Jenny and Irving that, while Hawley is nice to look at, he just doesn't quite fit.  In contrast, if there is a need for another character on "Team Ichabbie", it makes more sense to bring Joe Corbin (Zach Appleman) back because he was Sheriff Corbin's son, so is connected to Sleepy Hollow as well as his father's legacy.

This show is so historically driven by Washington's Bible, yet we haven't seen many episodes referring to it this season, nor have we seen Ichabod and Abbie following the cases Sheriff Corbin was tracking. I thought they would go that route having found his files and it would lead our witnesses to the dark Coven mentioned, other cases with biblical references to the Apocalypse, uncover more about Abbie and Jenny's family connection, etc... Maybe this is something that is coming for the second half of the season.  Now that Ichabbie is armed with Ben Franklin's journal, Grace Dixon's book of spells, as well as George Washington's Bible, we'll see roads leading back to some of Corbin's old cases.

One thing that I like this season is some of the character development they've been able to do thanks SH Heartless3to the extra episodes. However, bringing on Hawley who is clearly supposed to be a love interest for Abbie, has yet to give up anything about his background other than he's an armament dealer. The character has no real ties to Sleepy Hollow, so for me is just kind of irrelevant.  Where did he come from? How exactly did Jenny meet him? What was the nature and length of their relationship? Why did he latch on to her? What adventures did they have together? Can he be trusted?
Who has he worked for in the past? Why is he suddenly glued to the witnesses? These are all questions yet to be answered or even proposed! With how closed off Abbie is where her heart is concerned, the only reason to have Hawley even remotely intertwined with her is so Crane can realize he may have feelings for her. Other than this, while he's definitely eye candy for the ladies, I feel hooking him up with Abbie would be too dangerous for her and mission as a witness. "Trust no one Mr. Mulder." I think she needs to remember that!

And then there's Katrina, Ichabod's wife who has lied to him about several major things, including being a witch, working as a spy for George Washington, having their son Henry and being present, if not killing, his ex-girlfriend Mary Wells (Heather Lind).

Relationships have their ups and downs, maybe minor fibs such as "did you take out the trash", "yes I did"; however really didn't. The lies Katrina told were life-changing moments that shaped who she is and now, Ichabod feels he doesn't know her anymore! Her faith that Henry is only being controlled by Moloch and belief he can be saved has Crane-s-Dilema-Banner_128caused major tension among the two witnesses, namely because he is the Horseman of War!  Ichabod is clearly torn between his duties as a witness and as Henry's father, not wanting to have to choose a side.  This has become an
obstacle, as Ichabod's focus has been compromised during the first half of the season.  The duo, now working as a trio with Katrina, has been another item of contention among fans who are split between "Ichatrina" or "Ichabbie".

However, the Sleepyhead fandom really blew up after "Deliverance" aired, an episode written by new additions to the writing team, Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves. Mostly fans felt that Abbie's opinion as one of the Witnesses, was disregarded after Ichabod sided with Katrina against her, wanting to ask their son Henry for help. Then as the episode unfolded, Abbie seemed to be sidelined a little bit as Ichabod sort of took the reigns and saved Katrina via CPR, which he apparently immediately learned right after almost losing Abbie. Fans felt she was written as a stereotypical "helper".

For Beharie's part regarding this issue, in an interview she was surprised at the outpouring of support and had this to say, "Well, I'm highly aware of that just because I'm an actress and I'm African-
American, so I'm aware of that kind of thing, those stereotypes."  She further added, "I think it's just- we have amazing fans, they're so passionate, and I think they want to see the females characters on the show be developed totally in the way that some shows haven't done, in the way that everyone has expected from a show like this. One part of me is like "why does it have to be political or weird about who's doing what?" But I just think it's people caring about each character so much, and that's definitely a testament to the other actors work and the writers and the whole upheaval, it's really entertaining from this end.  It's almost like you guys are entertaining us after we attempt to give you your jollies."

Ultimately I feel the reason for the decline in viewership is due to two factors:

1. Lack of a "true rating" of exactly how many are watching live and via VOD;

2. Change in the dynamic of "Team Witness", ie: Ichabod's lack of focus, Katrina, addition of Hawley, lack of Jenny and Irving

The original formula implemented throughout season one appears to be what we will see in the mid-season finale episodes- can I just say hallelujah!  Now that Irving has escaped Tarrytown Psychiatric, Katrina may possibly go dark side and Jenny is back, I think the second half of the season is going to remind Sleepyheads why we fell in love with the show.

So what now?  Word is producers are keenly aware of the fan's growing concerns about the show.  They've planned an incredible two-part Fall Finale that begins on Monday, November 24, with "Magnum Opus" and a huge cliffhanger to leave us wanting more, airing December 1, titled "Akeda". I'm told it's what fan's have been waiting for, with our two witnesses stronger than ever searching for a sword to stop Moloch!  Irving and Jenny are both back, set to help our Witnesses.  These episodes will change everything, with surprise twists we won't expect!  "Akeda" will mark Ichabod's first
motorcycle ride with Abbie!  I'm very excited to see our dynamic duo buzzing down the street on a Harley! Additionally, looks like Katrina is back in the mix, away from Henry and a now fully grown Moloch! She joins the fight against Henry (or so it appears), looking like a character straight out of The Hunger Games!

Producers ensure that the second half of the season will be packed with lots of magic from Katrina, a fun Karaoke moment is coming in episode 14 and our Ichabbie will once again be focused on their mission!

For this Sleepyhead, I'm "all in", anxiously awaiting to see how the rest of the season unfolds.  I have confidence that if Sleepyheads can hang in there, the powers that be will right some of the issues and Sleepy Hollow will once again be on top!

Don't miss television's thrill-ride, Monday November 24 at 9p on FOX!

TV Interview: Nichole Beharie Talks Apocalyptic Love, Duty & War

To say I am obsessed with Sleepy Hollow is an understatement, so when I got the chance to chat with star of the hit apocalyptic thriller, Nichole Beharie (Abbie Mills), I was more than happy to answer the call!  Well into it's Sophomore season, Beharie spoke about monsters to come, dark family revelations and love!

Monday November 17 marks an episode fans have been waiting for! The episode titled "Mama", written Damian Kindler, is set to finally reveal the back-story of Abbie and Jenny's (Lyndie Greenwood) mother Lori Mills (Aunjanue Ellis), her journey into darkness and ultimately suicide.

According to Beharie, the episode will also begin to unravel exactly how and why Abbie is a witness.  She'll also finally talk more about her childhood with Ichabod (Tom Mison), which she has cleverly sort of side-stepped thus far.  "They basically have to go back into places that they don't necessarily want to revisit, and discover, really unhash and talk to even Crane." Opening this can of worms will be tough for Abbie, who hasn't wanted talk about how she and Jenny were thrust into the foster system, thinking their mother was really crazy and how she took her life.  Earlier this season we learned that not only did the new Sheriff in town Leena Reyes (Sakina Jaffrey) know Lori Mills, but also had a hand in how she landed in Tarry Town Psychiatric.  Abbie further discovered her mother believed demons were after them. Just how long has Moloch been involved in this family's destiny?  Looks we'll find out Monday! Interestingly, Beharie said it was not only tough for Abbie to explore her childhood, but also as an actress it was tough emotionally. SH Mamma8Ultimately the investigation will reveal more about their connection, as well as the roles they find themselves in as the coming apocalypse inches closer.  "They end up finding out that there's a reason why they were basically dragged through the mud as children in order to get them to this point, where Abbie's a witness and Jenny's this amazing, kickass, know-it-all, know all things occult, PhD level specialist", Beharie explains. She adds there will be a huge pay-off,  a revelation made about their mother. "There's a lot of darkness in the Mills' family history and will be a tough one to watch." Beharie further reveals, "You find out that there's a legacy that this family has regarding being a witness."

I find it interesting that given how much Abbie initially resisted what she and Jenny saw in the woods, that she's very focused on the mission.  Beharie adds "[Abbie] really is enjoying, even though it's difficult being a witness and having a purpose and getting away from that, the power of being a witness is liberating for Abbie."   This episode proves to be very emotional for our Mills sisters, so what was the toughest part for Beharie?  She was very excited to learn the two girls were going to have an episode dedicated to their story, but upon reading the script realized in the end, it's going to cost them.  Thus far, Ichabod's family has been front and center, with our hero dealing with the
possibility of losing his family.  Beharie previews Monday's episode will, "leave everybody in a really uncomfortable and uncertain place." Additionally, while the team must pull together and fight this monster, "it's so personal because it's a part of their history that they have to discuss, and their families.  And then, of course there are lots of lives at stake, and they have to make the right decision in the nick of time."

Fans have been concerned that Jenny has been put on the sidelines during the first part of this season.  Beharie ensures the Mills sisters are set to cause a little havoc and kick some ass!  "That's one of the huge thiSH Mamma5ngs that happens in this episode.  You'll see them butting heads, but not in the same way as last season." As the rest of the season unfolds, "we're definitely...going to see a lot more of the sisters really being close and working together."

Of course fans have been clamoring for more of Orlando Jones' character Frank Irving, whom we learned has signed away his soul to Henry (John Noble).  Ever since, our witnesses have kept him at bay locked up in Tarry Town Psychiatric, as they are not sure how exactly this puzzle piece factors into Henry's plans.  Beharie reports we will see more of Irving throughout Monday's episode and as the season progresses.

This season we've seen Abbie having to keep Ichabod on task as his focus has been split between his duties as a witness, his wife Katrina (Katia Winter) and son Henry.  It's been tough for Abbie to warm up to the idea of working as a trio, since Ichabbie sort of have their own rhythm and way they operate as a duo.  For me, it's definitely been a hindrance as Katrina seems to constantly be in jeopardy, though she has been helpful with her knowledge of magic. Not only has this been an issue for
Ichabbie, but Katrina's unwillingness to give up on their son Henry has brought the two witnesses to a crossroads, with Ichabod torn between Katrina and Abbie on the subject.  Abbie finally confronts Katrina in this week's episode "Heartless" and although it appears Ichabod is between a rock and a hard, he tries to placate both to work together.  So would Abbie take out Henry without Ichabod?  Beharie immediately answers Crane-s-Dilema-Banner_128"Absolutely!"  Though as to how exactly Abbie would accomplish this, she'd leave up to the writers.  She went on to say that for the remainder of the season, Ichabbie will be much more proactive.  "So they're sort of trying to get ahead of Henry and Moloch, so I could see them planning and doing all the little espionage [stuff] by having Katrina in the house, doing all the little things that you would do to win a war."  Sounds like our witnesses will return to war mode, which excites Beharie.

Sleepy Hollow is known for its apocalyptic, as well as mythological/folklore themed monsters and this season there's been a plethora- the Piped Piper, Wendigo, Succubus, Weeping Lady, all hit Sleepy's supernatural town for one reason or another.  Last season one of the aspects I loved about the show was its biblical monsters, brought forth to destroy our witnesses.

One of the issues I'm having as a viewer is the fact we are now seeing the Headless Horseman (aka) Abraham Van Brundt (Neil Jackson) more human because of Katrina's enchanted necklace that allows her to see him.  The scary Headless we loved in season one has been absent for the most part. Will we get back to some of the biblical  creatures and "End of Days" storyline?  Beharie previews yes!  "We definitely go back to biblical storytelling, especially when it comes back to the Headless Horseman and the Apocalypse."  However, she loves the different monsters. S2-Monsters-Banner_128"I'm personally really love all the different folklore, and we're actually taking it- the episode that we're shooting right now, which is based on Hinduism and Buddhism, we're taking it international in a way.  Just exploring all the different dark entities that all sorts of states or localities to play with.  I personally think that's really fascinating as I've been doing it."

After this week's episode titled "Heartless", a few things came to light that fans are split about- namely the ruggedly handsome, rogue bounty hunter Nick Hawley played by Matt Barr.  While fans are on the fence about the newest Sleepy Hollow resident, Beharie describes Abbie and Hawley's situation as a "really strange but saucy relationship where she knows what he wants and he knows what she wants, and they just kind of barter and bargain so both get a semblance of what they're
looking for."  She adds while Hawley seems to be in it for the money, the two witnesses are slowly turning his way of thinking around and he's realizing there is a lot more at stake.  I'd hope so after his soul was practically sucked out of him by a Succubus!

I think the "bromance" between Ichabod and Hawley has softened a little bit, especially after Ichabod's realization that the man has feelings for "Lieuftenent".  So will there be love on the horizon for our girl?  Surprisingly Beharie says it's the farthest thing from Abbie's mind!  "I think as far as the love thing is concerned, it's funny because this year on the show there's a lot of romantic undercurrent going on, whereas last year there really wasn't any."  Ultimately Beharie feels Abbie just needs to find the right guy.  For those who know me, you know who I think she should end up with! LOL  I found it interesting that Ichabod is willing to put up with Hawley, should Abbie decide to "explore a social SH Heartless4realationship" with him.  I think he was taken aback at Abbie's statement that getting involved would only lead to complications.  I guess only time will tell if "Nicabbie" will go for it!  As far as the fan's go, for the most part a majority feel that because Hawley has already had a relationship with Jenny, a romance with her sister will break that sacred sister code!

For anyone that watches the show or has seen them in person, Tom Mison and Nikki Beharie have chemistry- on and off screen.  I can only imagine how fun it must be for them on set, especially because everyone gets along and really cares about what they are creating.  So are there moments they ad-lib or adjust the script?  Beharie says no, that Tom is able to bring the words to life.  She adds, "I think the writers are really talented.  They come up with it and Tom has dexterity with language that it feels very natural, it feels like it's being ad-libbed, but those are the lines on the page." However, just because they don't stray from the script doesn't mean they don't have fun!  She describes that sometimes they'll just start cracking up after a goofy moment or from something that
happened off set.  "We have these little warm-ups that we'll do together or actually, in the upcoming episode, there's a thing we've been doing off set as friends that we're actually [going to do] on camera."  I can only imagine the cuteness that will emerge!  Beharie mentions the Karaoke episode where we'll see some little ad-libbed moments, but for the most part they tend to stay within the confines of the script.  Speaking of Karaoke, apparently it will be a situation that the gang takes a little down time.  I'm really looking forward to this!

In season one, we got to see Abbie's pad which was a nice change from the witness's usual hangouts at the Archives or Ichabod's cabin.  Fans really enjoyed seeing it and Abbie doing something as mundane as chopping vegetables.  Will we see her apartment again or see the Mills sisters just hanging out watching a movie?  Beharie explains that because of all that goes on, there is very little down time.  The show sort of operates between the archives room, police SH Mamma6department and the cabin.  The reason the gang finds themselves at Ichabod's cabin, is because it's more like a command post for everyone. Though she says it would be nice to see her digs again, as well as some chill time for the sisters, she's not so sure we'll get anything like that this season.

The first episode of the season we saw Abbie still trapped in Purgatory and one of my favorite scenes was when she contacted Ichabod who promised to return for her.  It was heartbreaking that at her weakest moment, the "Ichabod" that showed up later was actually a demon pretending to be him.  Their bond has been so close that it was tough to see Abbie go through those emotions. While Ichabbie did have a brief conversation about her time spent there, it hasn't really been explored further.  Will they revisit Abbie's horrendous tour in Purgatory?  Beharie says no.  "I think the characters are so resilient.  They just had to sort of get it together." She went on to say that Abbie and Ichabod just kind of had to keep on going, which is "symptomatic and true of people who are in a battle situation."  Neither of them had the time to deal with it or even catch their breath.  Beharie adds, "I don't necessarily think we're going to be exploring what happened in Purgatory, but there's a hell of a lot of fighting coming up that I think is as dynamic and you'll get to see the witnesses come together and sort of discuss a little bit about their battle wounds, but not from purgatory, no."

I'd say my favorite moment of "Heartless" is when Abbie finally confronts Katrina regarding
Ichabbie's duty to bring down Henry, though she remains faithful he can be redeemed.  In a smack down, who does Beharie think would win? She doesn't think there should be one!  "Why can't Katrina just be like an awesome witch and do amazing things, and SH Heartless1Abbie do really well at what she does and they unite?  That's what I want to see.  I don't necessarily want them fighting one another."  While she's definitely on the side of the trio working together, Beharie does feel that at some point they'll definitely have to work out the kinks in their relationship.  I guess it all remains to be seen!  Can Katrina be trusted or will Henry and baby Moloch force her to turn on the witnesses?  We'll have to stay tuned!

Obviously there are "shippers" out there for "Team Ichabbie" or "Team Ichatrina".  This is one of the first television shows to have two beautiful people, one is married but fans are torn as to who should be together.  How does Beharie feel about all the hoopla?  "I'm actually intrigued by the idea.  Not necessarily of them being a pair or shipped together, but just the sheer interest and passion of the audience, of the fans.  I'm completely taken aback every single week with the stuff that's sent in, whether it's artwork or commentary or things that I don't notice--how did they see all those details?" It's hard for her to believe how much detail fans remember, something that as actors they wouldn't consider a big deal, suddenly is noticed and viewers want more!

Many of us noticed that Beharie has been offline for several weeks, so imagine her astonishment upon checking in on Sunday night and seeing the amount of support she received from fans.  As most Sleepyheads know, after the airing of "Deliverance", fans were in an uproar over Abbie's role within that episode, concerned she was being depicted as a stereotype due to her African-American heritage. This sparked a huge twitter campaign, using hashtag #AbbieMillsDeservesBetter.  Not only were fans getting behind Beharie, but Lyndie as well as Katia, using hashtags #JennyMillsDeservesBetter and #KatrinaDeservesBetter.  The campaigns were a success as the producers, as well as writers and cast, took to twitter on Monday to answer fan's concerns.

Beharie learned of what happened and had this to say, "Well, I'm highly aware of that just because I'm an actress and I'm African-American, so I'm aware of that kind of thing, those stereotypes."  How did she learn of the incredible outpouring from fans?  A few of her friends told her about it, so she checked it out and saw a ton of posts with the different hashtags in support of the characters.  "I think it's just- we have amazing fans, they're so passionate, and I think they want to see the females characters on the show be developed totally in the way that some shows haven't done, in the way that everyone has expected from a show like this", Beharie adds.  She went on to say she really appreciates the passion, all the questions from both sides.  "One part of me is like "why does it have to be political or weird about who's doing what?" But I just think it's people caring about each
character so much, and that's definitely a testament to the other actors work and the writers and the whole upheaval, it's really entertaining from this end.  It's almost like you guys are entertaining us after we attempt to give you your jollies."

"Does she ever sit down with the writers to discuss the way her character is written to ensure there is nothing stereotypical?  Beharie says that hasn't happened.  "But I think we're pretty aware of it, and when little things pop up, we just kind of give a little side eye and say, "I don't really know about that. That might not work out so well", and everyone is cool and really understands it. She adds, "I'm just completely, honestly, touched, of late, that people care enough, have so much to say about the show, you know?"  Beharie is also floored at how fans are sort of fighting on different sides.  "There's a side that feels like Katrina's not being developed in a way she could be and all that kind of stuff, and everyone has valid comments and it's all respect and love, and we just love the fact that everyone is watching and they care so much to say all these things."

In closing, Beharie had these parting words, "Please tune in on Monday and give us a little blast and just stay tuned! We have a lot of great stuff coming up."  You took the words right out of my mouth Nikki!  Don't miss a second of Sleepy Hollow, Mondays at 9pm on FOX!

Sleepy Hollow's "Heartless" Conjures Hidden Desires and Questions of Trust

After last week offered Sleepy Hollow's most controversial episode to date, "Heartless" revealed an inkling as to which side our players are choosing as Moloch enters our world.  Written by Albert Kim, this episode put many issues to rest after last week's "Deliverance".

While the episode begins with the Crane's introduction to reality television a la The Bachelor, things quickly turn upon Abbie's (Nichole Beharie) arrival to the cabin, focused on the mission to stop Henry (John Noble) at all costs.  She is met with Katrina's (Katia Winter) unwillingness to believe her son is lost cause, though Ichabod (Tom Mison) greatly struggles between his duty as a witness and as Henry's father.  In last week's episode "Deliverance", it was incredulous that the Crane's voted against Abbie in favor of asking Henry to remove baby Moloch from Katrina's womb.  This week, yet again Katrina refuses to give up on her child. My favorite moment is when  Abbie finally confronts Katrina, reminding her that she and Ichabod were working together long before her arrival and as witnesses, must do what is necessary to stop Henry.

The Succubus

What exactly is a Succubus?  It's a demon or supernatural entity that takes form as a beautiful woman to seduce men.  She is a seductress, enchantress, with the ability to use her sexuality to feed on men with deep sexual desires.

In this episode Henry conjures a seductress for the sole purpose of "feeding" baby Moloch.  Caroline Ford guest stars as the entity who sucks the souls from men after seducing them.  What's interesting is that this Succubus isn't discriminatory and actually goes after men, as well as women, who have deep desire for another.

The Hawley Factor

Ever since bounty hunter Nick Hawley (Matt Barr) hit Sleepy Hollow, I've wondered exactly what exactly his deal is, where his loyalties lie and is he truly just out for himself?  It's obvious he has the hots for "Lieuftenent", however this character is underdeveloped at this point.
In this episode he becomes the object of the Succubus's attention, saved after Ichabod and Abbie arrive on the scene.  For me, while I'm fairly certain he was brought on as a love interest for our girl, I'm not sure it will work. He's definitely "eye candy" for the ladies, but was I concerned that the Succubus was about to suck the soul right out of him? Not really because as a viewer I'm not emotionally invested in him yet. Although I see a small spark of chemistry between the two, I take issue with the fact that he's already been with Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood), who seems much better suited for him.

On the other side of the coin, we saw Abbie struggling in this new dynamic of working with Katrina and Ichabod.  There were several moments when you could feel the tension between them, the awkwardness as she kept the gang on task.  I loved when she rolled her eyes at having to "protect" Katrina while Ichabod and Hawley tried to locate the Succubus.

I think it was hard for Katrina to see her husband working so effortlessly with Abbie as they tracked down the demon femme fatale.  The duo has a rhythm, a way of working as a team and for me, I saw the strain between Katrina and Abbie as a hindrance.  I did like that we saw her use magic, as well as her knowledge of it, so I can see how valuable she is to whichever side she's on.  I love how attentive Ichabod is with Katrina, though she always appears to be in distress for one reason or another, which is also becoming a hindrance to a certain extent.  I feel that Abbie has been trying to cope with Ichabod's situation, even going to Hawley to try and find answers (or a new partner?), which was futile.

Ever since Corbin (Clancy Brown) was killed, Abbie and Ichabod have been so intertwined as the two witnesses united, their mission clear. This season Abbie has had to pull Ichabod's focus from his wife and son, to their mission numerous times.  She's grappled with how to approach the sticky
situation and deep down, I think she knows Ichabod fears losing his family.  This is why I feel she's been so patient.  I'm sure the time to choose between his duties as a witness and his family is coming, which is why we've had to see him side with Katrina.  He's internally at war with himself, which is what the Succubus could see.

As Ichabod's internal struggle about Katrina and Henry continues, I believe the Succubus hit upon something he didn't expect...his feelings for Abbie.  I kept waiting for her to confront Ichabod and there are a couple of ways to interpret what she says to him.

A Succubus has always been a sexual entity, preying on men's deep, unspoken desires, so when she revealed a hidden secret desire I believe it's because his love for Katrina has diminished, and feelings for Abbie are slowly bubbling to the surface.  However, some fans think the deep secret he holds is not for desire in a sexual way, but his feelings about Henry. We all know he's between a rock and a hard place- Katrina and Abbie, with regards to fully going after his son.  Is this the "secret desire" the Succubus sees? I'm going to say no, not based on the individuals she specifically targeted during the episode.

1. At "Twerk" her first victim was a geek with lust for a girl he was afraid to ask to dance.
2. Her second victim was a woman who had a desire for her best friend
3. Her almost third victim has the hots for Abbie

While some argue that Ichabod's reading was cerebral because she didn't "touch" him sexually, she was advancing towards him with every intention of doing so.  She is an enchantress after all, with her sights set on those with hidden sexual desires.

Upon realizing Hawley has designs on Abbie, Ichabod appears uncomfortable about the revelation.  As a few fans pointed out, they felt Ichabod's questioning of Hawley's intentions with Abbie was more like a relative wanting to "protect" her.  In the conversation Ichabod had with Abbie, I felt he was trying to find out if she has feelings for Hawley. Abbie and Ichabod have a deep connection, a level of trust that Katrina has broken with him.  He is a very noble, honest man that holds trust to be almost sacred. I think Hawley's attraction makes Ichabod nervous. One of the lighter moments of the episode was when Abbie and Ichabod were chatting at the cabin about "macking on a lady". She reached out and put her hand on his leg, which he noticed! Am I reading too much into things?  Only time will tell!

Let's talk about Ichabod and Hawley, the "bromance" that both have been forced into thanks to their connection to Abbie.  I love when Ichabod notices Hawley pining for Abbie.  He makes it a point to say Hawley's debt to her is done now that she saved his life.  He seems a little unnerved by Hawley's attraction to her, so much that he has a conversation with her about it.  Though he appears to give his approval, hearing that Abbie feels opening her heart leads to complications is a surprise to him. Would she be able to open her heart to Ichabod easier because of their mission together and complete trust they have in each other?  How will Ichabod handle being the "third wheel" should Abbie and Hawley decide to take the relationship plunge?  Just a little food for thought...
Katrina's Role

"Love can be a very dangerous weapon", Katrina tells Abbie at the end of the episode, as she plans to reconnect with Abraham in hopes of killing baby Moloch.  However, what were her real reasons for returning to Abraham? Does she have feelings for him or is she simply bowing out as the "third wheel" to pave the way for the two witnesses to carry on?

What is painfully clear, as Ichabod says himself, "Katrina's heart has always been deep and mysterious, a fact that she has used to her advantage."  Some fans believe that Ichabod was actually Katrina's "assignment", to keep the witness close to her.  She was clearly flirting with him in "Weeping Lady", though engaged to Abraham at the time. Remember, she knew Ichabod was a witness way before he realized it upon awaking in the 21st century.  One of the most poignant moments was when he says to Katrina, "It pained me to think you were not who I knew. A witch, a spy they are apart of who you are and secrecy is a hard habit to break." It is a very hard habit to break.  Can she be trusted moving forward?  Is this the beginning of the end of her alliance with Ichabbie?  Will Ichabod's faith in her, as well as a possible redemption for his son really come to fruition?
In my view, it's very difficult to determine where exactly her heart truly lies. She obviously made a
connection with Abraham during her capture and I believe that necklace has infected her, much like baby Moloch had. Enchanted, the necklace has given her the ability to see Abraham and now, a baby where a monster lies.  I think the necklace has been the reason she refuses to let go of Henry, as well as connection to the baby. Is she truly being manipulated completely? How much of the necklace's power factored into her decision to go back to Abraham?  It still remains to be seen.

When all is said and done ultimately, as Ichabod has said several times, only Ichabbie can take this journey.  Relationships change, especially during war and yes, that relationship must grow too.  Ichabod has changed, is definitely not the same man he was 250 years ago. He's been catapulted into the 21st century, and as Katrina pointed out "has moved on with his life, with Abbie at his side". Will Ichabod be able to put aside the hurt he felt due to Katrina's lies and truly trust her?  He desperately wants to, with all his heart, but as the Succubus pointed out his heart has doubts.

My prediction is that Katrina will turn on Ichabbie, join Henry and protect baby Moloch!  Am I right? You'll just have to keep tuning in on Mondays at 9 pm on FOX!
