SDCC Exclusive Interview: McCune Masterworks Partners w/Profiles In History To Auction 'Star Wars' Blockade Runner

I was only 8 years old when I first saw Star Wars: A New Hope in the theater with my dad, who leaned over to read the screen as the story scrolled, then seeing those big space ships literally seem to come over my head- it was epic.  Like most fans, it was the moment that changed my life forever.

I remember being in awe of it all and wanting to be Princess Lea (Carrie Fisher) so that Luke (Mark Hamill) could save me!  I had such a crush on him, then in Empire Strikes Back fell in love with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) with women of all ages across the globe! Of course hundreds of kids donned the familiar costumes that Halloween, both my sister and I were dressed as Princess Lea, braided buns and all, while my brother dressed as Luke, proudly brandished his light-saber ready for a battle at any moment.  Suffice it to say, my brothers and I have deeply embedded lifetime ties to the outer space saga that is now ingrained within every fan's being, generation to generation.

Star Wars was probably the biggest draw at this years San Diego Comic Con.  Lucasfilm had a huge section of the exhibit hall that successfully conjured nostalgia for the epic space saga, with clips from the original films playing in the background, C3PO and R2D2 greeting excited fans of all ages. Taken over by Disney, the seventh installment Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set to hit the big screen December 18.  As a die-hard fan of the legendary series, it was a real treat to see the incredible exhibits and art created by several different companies.  Collectibles were in high demand as fans gathered the coveted "SDCC Exclusives".

When I heard George Lucas sold the franchise to Disney, I have to say I was nervous.  Seeing the man that created the galactic opus handing the keys over to anyone was scary to me, however, after watching the trailer and the Star Wars Panel at the San Diego Comic Con, I have faith in J. J. Abrams. One of the my biggest concerns was that too much C.G.I. (Computer Generated Images) was done in Episodes I, II & III that took away from the original films.  J. J. Abrams and his team have actually created new creatures and models, much like they did in the first three films, which I feel will give it an authenticity lacking in the newer films.

I had the privilege of chatting with Brian Chanes, Consignment Specialist at Profiles In History and Project Manager Monty Shook, who currently works for McCune Masterworks, about the upcoming auction, as well as how McCune Masterworks has met legendary status within the film industry.

Profiles in History made its mark in Hollywood thanks to their first memorabilia auction in the mid-1980's and it has grown into the largest auction house in the country.  Dedicated to entertainment memorabilia, they deal with anything from costume designs to old scripts to building miniatures, hand props, pretty much anything used in a movie, they've got it.  Chanes reports the company has done over ten Comic Cons throughout the years, which has served them well in getting coveted buyers interested in unique movie memorabilia.

So why have they partnered with McCune Masterworks?  Chanes explains he was very excited by the union. "Grant McCune, academy award-winning visual effects master, though he died a few years ago the company still goes on.  The heritage of the company lives on and they still work on commercials, films, visual effects projects, [but] also make custom collectibles, animatronics, space ships, wonderful fantastic things.  We wanted to let people know and the comic con demographic is perfect."

One of the featured models on display was the very first ship seen in Star Wars: A New Hope, the 'Blockade Runner' chased by the Galactic Empire in the opening sequence.  What fans may not know is that the team behind creating a lot of the on-screen props used in the original films were designed by Grant McCune, founder of McCune Masterworks and one of the greatest special effects visionaries of our time.

McCune Masterwork's current Project Manager, Monty Shook, has worked on numerous television series and films over his 30-year career.  He also collaborated with Oscar winning visual effects legend Gene Warren. Although Shook did not work on the original Star Wars movie with McCune, he brings years of design experience creating incredible pieces such as animatronics, sculptures, props of all sizes, that have been seen in many movies we all know.  Some include Battle in Los Angeles, Flightplan, Terminator 2, Batman Forever, Batman Returns, U571, Open Water, to name a few.  He is also responsible for hiring the talent and being very selective to ensure designers fit the McCune employee profile, as some projects last months, sometimes over a year.

While McCune Masterworks does a lot of custom orders for that rare client who may need 100-500 pieces of a one-of-a-kind creation, Shook explains they are now working with mainstream consumers. "We are also doing consumer type projects for people who collect different scales of star ships or space crafts.  There's modular pieces [that people] can buy one-five or ten pieces to add to it, [models] can go floor to ceiling, we have a table option or if they want to hang it from the ceiling we can do that."  Another cool service they provide is if a client has an idea, Shook and his team will sit down, pencil sketch it and take it all the way to completion.  "If [a client] doesn't have an idea, we'll conceive it for them, develop and create it", Shook adds.

It's safe to say that with computer animation, creating everything the mind can imagine and taking it to whatever level or dimension one can conjure, has catapulted film in all formats to amazing new heights. What's the biggest difference between what was created for Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Force Awakens?  Shook describes now, his team would look at reference photos or drawings, ask the creative on the project what they want something to look like.  At this point, they'd "hand render it, then go to digital to generate a 3-D model, print it out and then create the molds to make a model, whether it's break away or flying model, motion control. We'd make it like we used to." Back in the mid-1970's, they didn't have the luxury of computers, so it was all done manually, from concept to finished product.

Obviously the late Grant McCune and George Lucas worked closely together on the original films to bring to life what Lucas had in his head.  The epic battle scenes between the Millennium Falcon and Tie Fighters sent by Darth Vader was very similar to dogfights during WWII, which Lucas envisioned and described as an example over the years during interviews.  One of the crucial things is getting the right on-screen shots of the models to make it look realistic. According to Shook, the model must be shot at a high rate of speed. "You have to shoot it at high-speed.  There's actually a formula- it's the square root of the scale x 24 and that determines your camera speed which works across the board except for water shots. Water you have to run tests. Generally you don't want to do smaller quarter scale for water shots.  Now we got away with it in U571 using twentieth scale, which only worked in smoke and fifth scale, which worked in Open Water, that worked fine. It's right on the border of what works for water shots."  What does this all mean? The smaller the model, the tougher it is to make the shots work and look realistic.

In Star Wars Episodes I and II, I was disappointed because there was clearly too much C.G.I. that really affected the continuity, look and feel of the series.  Chanes agrees. "There's this point where it looks almost like a cartoon, lacks an organic three dimensional quality and even cartoon physics were applied.  It looks like it's on a flat screen which doesn't work with the forces in play. [That's the] reason J.J. Abrams is going back to the practical.  People like it.  People cut that corner and do C.G.I because they can do it in post-production. Creating miniature models takes more time prepping, there are more variables in play for doing [that], filming on camera with miniatures."

Working as a designer for over 30 years, what were some of of Shook's favorite films he worked on? "That'd be hard to pick.  I did Terminator 2, spent a long time working on that. Did all of the sequences with the truck turning over, breaking in half.  The Batman movies were very fun to work on, Batman Returns and Batman Forever.  Did the model for the X-Men 2 movie."

Speaking of X-Men 2, one of the pieces on display was a gigantic, 65' wide, break-away 'X-Jet' created for the flick by Shook and his team of six designers, who reverse engineered the model. However, after three months of work, the studio decided to create it in C.G.I.  So why would they do C.G.I vs Model?  "They can add it in post-production, however, there are a lot more people involved in doing C.G.I.   When we first started doing C.G, the techniques were more primitive, so making models was easier. But now they create and run it through software programs for shots, reanimate it over and over, write the program for the software for each shot.  There are programmers, analogs, map guys, etc..  It's more expensive because there are more people involved."  Shook said they did their own test scenes with it, which actually looked phenomenal, just as good as the C.G.I in the movie.  He said one of the best early C.G.I creations done was when they first tried to do the King Kong movie, figuring out how to make it look good in the wind, make it move fluently and look real. I'd say they definitely succeeded!

Interestingly, as we continued to chat about models versus C.G.I., Chanes talked about Jurassic Park, which is one of my all-time favorite movies.  He revealed that while the Brontosaurus shot of the mild-mannered dino eating leaves from a tree in that first moment is C.G.I., the Velociraptors are not! Created by Sam Weston, the Velociraptors in the terrifying kitchen scene when they're chasing the kids are real-life sized models.  A famed skateboarder and visual effects guru Mark 'Crash' McCreery is actually part of the creature.  Apparently his fellow visual effects experts immediately recognized his huge calves!

So when is the next auction where you can get your hands of some of the most innovative creations made for television and movies? Profiles In History is providing collectors a once-in-a-lifetime chance to purchase the legendary 'Blockade Runner' miniature, the very first ship ever to be seen in the saga! There are many other pieces set to be auctioned over the four-day event and right now it looks like the Blockade Runner will be auctioned on either day three or four.  The auction event will run September 28 to October 1, at the Profiles In History Auction House, located at 26662 Agoura Road, Calabasas, CA, 91302.  Don't live in California?  No problem!  Qualified bidders can participate either in person, by telephone (310) 859-7701, submit absentee bids or participate online in real time from anywhere with internet access across the globe.

SDCC Exclusive Interview: Michael Easton Showcases His Epic Graphic Novels & Short Film

I have been a fan of Michael Easton ever since he arrived on the shores of Salem on Days of Our Lives in 1991 and I've followed his career as it continued to soar, with appearances on hit television shows like The Practice, Ally McBeal, The 70's, VR5 and Total Recall 2070 to name a few.

I'll never forget flipping through channels one day while home sick from work and seeing him on Port Charles as Caleb Morley, a love lorn vampire hell bent on getting the woman he was destined to be with at all costs! I was immediately obsessed with the angst-ridden story. He was incredible in the role, along with his leading lady Kelly Monaco, who played Olivia Locke, the woman Caleb had been waiting for centuries to meet.  Of course I was thrilled when he joined the cast of General Hospital as his One Live To Live character John McBain to play opposite Monaco's Sam Morgan. Unfortunately due to complications behind the scenes, McBain had to hang up his detective shoes and Easton was written back into the legendary soap opera as Dr. Silas Clay, brother of rock star and self proclaimed vampire Stephen Clay (Caleb).  Aaahhh the twists and turns of a continuing drama!

Fast forward to 2008, when Easton finally released his first graphic novel called Soul Stealer- Inferno and Redemption, followed by Soul Stealer- Blood and Rain, Time Heals Nothing, with the final installment Soul Stealer- Last To Die.  If you aren't familiar with graphic novels, they tell a story via stunning visual art and takes storytelling to a whole new level.  As someone who has never read comic books, I was blown away by the beauty of the novel, illustrated by Christopher Shy and now understand its intoxicating draw.  Not only did he create this mind-blowing, thriller trilogy, but he also co-wrote The Green Woman with famed best-selling writer Peter Straub for DC Comics and most recently released his latest graphic novel creation, Credence.

Named 'Graphic Novel of the Year' by Ain't It Cool News, the Soul Stealer trilogy is about a warrior
named Kalan who is hell bent on finding his lost lover, killed at the hands of his sworn enemy Apis Bull.  Kalan is transformed into a supernatural entity, with the ability to steal souls to return them from the afterlife.  His mission is to find the love of his life, but also to avenge her death and go after Bull. It's such an epic, romantic story that tugs at the heart strings, but also gives the reader a hero to immediately latch on to, someone we root for and want to see reunited with his one true love!

So how did Easton come up with this fantastical, Gothic, spiritual opus?  Incredibly it came to him in a dream in 2002.  He woke up jotted a line down on a napkin, and then the journey into writing began. "Sometimes these stories write themselves if you're patient with it. And I only wrote when I wanted to write and that's why there's a big gap between getting the idea in 2002. It took 10-12 years. It sort of became a trilogy and that felt like the time to end it."

What made him decide to make it a graphic novel?  Having been a comic reader for most of his life, with the story that unfolded, Easton strongly believed it should be a graphic novel versus comic book series.  "It took me a long time but I just kept writing and started thinking about an artist. I started talking to a few people and they sent some artists but [they] weren't quite right. One day I was in the old Virgin Records on Sunset Blvd, there was a bargain book there that said 'The Art of Christopher Shy', but he didn't do graphic novels."  At his wife's urging, he contacted Shy who luckily agreed to work on the project.

The trilogy is such a beautifully crafted saga, personally I see it as a webseries or television series.  Is that something Easton is open to?  "For a long time I thought it could be a feature film, but more and more been thinking could be episodic in the vane of Game of Thrones because it does mix a lot of genres- fantasy and Scifi. It's got a lot of influences in it from traditional mythology, Orpheus and Icarus, melds itself with Frank Frazetta, a big inspiration for a lot of the earlier stuff.  And then there's a post-apocalyptic world, kind of inspired by Ridley Scott, Bladerunner, Dark Skies and Dark City and all these great things."

Some of you may not realize that Easton is an award-winning producer/writer/director, and recently won  'Best of  Show' for his short film called Ultraviolent, which stars former One Live To Live cast-mate Trevor St. John.  "Yeah, I called in a favor.  I wasn't working for long periods of time, so rather than think about it too much, was nice to get a camera and just start shooting. It was just one actor, in a room, for one night and I cut it up, then sent it in to an online festival (The Best Shorts Competition) and some friends said they were really good judges of material." The Best Shorts Competition is judged by exceptional professionals in the television and film industry, so Easton was blown away by the win, "We're still stunned, overwhelmed by it."

Ultraviolent tells the tragic tale of director Donald Cammell's psychotic break into madness thanks to his bizarre preoccupation with art and death.  St John masterfully immediately pulls the viewer into his depraved psyche, that one can feel due to Easton's innovative vision utilizing compelling, dark music to set the tone, which ultimately culminates with Cammell's suicide.

Unfortunately, his fans are unable to see the trailer at this time as Easton has plans to continue sending it to different festivals around the world, so right now the trailer can only be seen at the conventions he attends.  His hope is to get it into the coveted Sundance Festival, as well as Cannes Festival, among many others.

Easton has made the Comic Con rounds over the years with his graphic novels, which has garnered many fans of his work.  What is the best part about doing the Comic Cons?  "It's being here, meeting fans.  Some people know me from this, they read Credence last year and came back.  It feels good to talk with them about it."  Although he has done panels before including one with co-author Straub for The Green Woman, he did not do one this time around.  "I was sent a couple of requests to do panels this year but I didn't think I could add much and I didn't feel it.  [This year] I'm mostly here to just share what we did, show the trailer and the artist for Credence is here as well."

Whether he's burning up our screens as Silas Clay on General Hospital, writing a graphic novel trilogy, or directing and producing an award-winning short, Michael Easton has found a way to pull us into his imagination, a world where the heart of a storyteller lives.

Be sure to check out Easton's graphic novel trilogy Soul Stealer, as well as Credence and other works available for purchase on Amazon (search 'Michael Easton' below). Also visit Blackwatch Comics website for the latest news on his all his projects.

'Once Upon A Time'- San Diego Comic Con Press Room Interviews

The gang from Once Upon A Time arrived as predicted, everyone was very excited about the new Brave's Merida has been cast and is headed for Storybrooke, played by Amy Manson (Atlantis). season, which begins September 27, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

As a fan of the series since day one, it was a thrill to be in the press room with the cast.  They all seemed really excited about what's in store for the new season and were very approachable.

The big news dropped that Camelot will be prevalent in the first half of the season, however, Executive Producers Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis said that while there will be a distinct first and second half of a season like last year, the storyline will follow through the entire season.  This is the plan moving forward from now on because of the big break in between.  How did they make the decision that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) would harness the Dark One?  They liked playing with the question as to whether she would embrace the darkness within all season.  When push came to shove, our Savior did what her heart truly said and refused to become evil.  Horowitz and Kitsis loved going back and forth with it, so that in the end, for the audience, it was a huge sacrifice for her to tether it.  During the panel, a brief trailer of Emma in full Dark One regalia was shown.  Horowitz commented on the brief clip, "It was more for promotional.  We shot that for Comic Con as a special treat for all the fans that came out." Kitsis adds Emma's look is still evolving, but that it generally what she will look like.

Regina (Lana Parilla) has been through the gambit during her transformation to redemption and it has been the one storyline that stayed consistent since season one.  Of course learning she had a "wicked" sister Zelena (Rebecca Mader), set the stage for sibling rivalry at it's best!  One of the things that fans are hoping for next season, is that Regina and Snow will work together to release the Dark One from Emma.  How does Parilla feel about that?  She feels that they will work together, however, Zelena will be a thorn in her side, especially as the pregnancy continues.

The two-part season finale was left with Robin back in Regina's arms and Zelena holed up under lock and key at the psych ward, pregnant with Robin's baby.  Fans were hoping to get an interview with Lana Parrilla and Sean Maguire (Robin Hood) together, but Parilla made the rounds by herself, while Rebecca Mader was paired with Maguire.  Will we learn more about the Lionheart tattoo Robin sports?  Magurie says most likely.  "I think so.  I try not to ask too many questions unless it's something I really need to know. But it's a lion and you think of Robin Hood and it's around the time he gets to Lionheart, it's around the Camelot subject."  Though he honestly does not know at this point, it sounds like we will most likely get to learn more about it.  Mader says she loves playing Greenie to Parilla's Regina.  Mader describes working with Parilla, "I love it! One of the things that's delicious with Lana and I when we work together, it's kind of like a dance between these two strong women, going toe to toe", getting into each other's faces.  "It's so intense and juicy. I love working with Lana." Things will get intense for the siblings to say the very least! Mader adds, "I think Robin would be quite happy to see the end of my broomstick."

For me, as well as fans, the most frustrating thing has been Rumplestilkin's (Robert Carlyle) storyline. Even if you're not a "Rumbelle" fan, the fact that it appears he will not get redemption, has sparked many a conversation on social media.  I remember last year I asked Adam and Eddie why they killed off Baelfire (Michael Raymond-James), Rumple's "happy ending"?  Apparently there can be more than one happy ending.  That said, Rumple took a dark turn at the end of season four, then continued to completely embrace it this past season, working with Ursula (Merrin Gungey), Cruella (Victoria Smurfit) and Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten).  Of course things ended badly once Belle (Emile de Ravin) realized he'd been lying to her, and she was not in possession of the real
dagger.  The backlash went from bad to worse after she learned of the betrayal and sent him packing, banishing Rumple from Storybrooke.  Some say it was a cruel twist of fate that Belle callously sent him on his way, however, how could she trust him again? While I was not happy she quickly turned her affections to Will, I have to say it was nice to see her strength and resolve.

Ever since Greenie showed up on the canvass, it's been fun watching the fear she instills in Rumple, especially in season four, while he was caged like an animal.  Carlyle was brilliant, with the ability to convey the crazy in such a way that was heartbreaking to watch.  Then again, when Zelena made a surprise visit as Rumple lay helpless on his hospital bed, that terror crept over his face like the darkness over his heart.  How does he get into the mindset to play crazy? He says it's something difficult to describe, but says is pleased that so many  people liked it.

The finale left Rumple a crumpled, pathetic heap on the floor of his shop, as his heart was about to be completely consumed by the Dark One. Afraid of losing him, Belle asks the usual suspects for help and the Dark One is extracted from Rumple...finally!  So will or can Rumple live without the Dark One?  I mean he's definitely addicted to magic, so even if it means sacrificing himself in the end, could that be in the cards?  Carlyle was pretty tight-lipped about what will become of Rumplestilskin upon regaining consciousness, but smiles and agrees Rumple is addicted.  What that will mean as this season continues, remains to be seen.  de Ravin says she loves the fact that Belle's relationship with Rumple/Gold is realistic, as they go through different obstacles throughout the relationship.

Of course "Captain Swan" was on hand to chat about Emma's descent into darkness!  Emma bravely sacrificed herself to tether the Dark One while Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin), Charming (Josh Dallas), Regina and Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) figure out how to extract it.  All season long we were concerned that Emma would choose to go darkside, in the end she refused, but how ironic is it that "The Savior" saved the day so-to-speak?  So how will her relationship with Henry be affected? Morrison says it doesn't matter that she's the Dark One because she'll do whatever it takes to keep her son safe...even if it means she has to keep him away from her. One of the most gut-wrenching moments was when, even after Hook died in the alternate fairytale, Emma still couldn't say she loved him.  Why not?  Morrison answers she completely understands Emma in this situation because she's very similar.  She, on a personal level, has a tough time herself saying "I love you", afraid of getting too close.  What if this person leaves or isn't there anymore? Plus, trust is a big factor.  Sounds like Hook, Snow and Charming will have their hands full as they attempt to release the hold of the Dark One from Emma.

It was really nice meeting Ginnifer Goodwin this year, as she was indisposed last year thanks to the little one!  Both Goodwin and Josh Dallas were on hand to chat about the new mission this season to pull the Dark One out of Emma.  Goodwin loved playing the evil queen in the finale episode and Dallas feigned that's how she treats him at home- it was cute!  They both are very excited about the new season and said Camelot will be prominent in the first half of the season.  Goodwin believes Snow and Regina will definitely work together to save Emma.  They spoke about Henry's role, though neither was sure exactly how he will fit into the storyline as only three episodes were filmed thus far.  Henry being the Author will be a factor, but they weren't sure exactly in what way.

The press room was great and it was fun to sit down face to face with the cast to get a feel for them as actors, as well as what's coming up for their characters.  Like last year, none of them could really say a whole lot, but the addition of Merida from Brave will be a welcome addition.  Jared Gilmore (Henry) was not at the press room this year, but I spoke to him last year about his role and whom he's learned from the most on set.

Don't miss the premiere of S5 of Once Upon A Time returns September 27, 2015 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Conan O'Brien: Comic Con's Biggest Geek Hits Town

In an historic moment, two months ago Late Night Talk Show host Conan O'Brien announced he'd be bringing his show to the San Diego Comic. The comedian reported he arrived in the
town-that-loves-nerds three days ago, in preparation for the special edition episodes which will be aired Wednesday-Saturday July 8-11, from the Spreckles Theatre in the heart of the Gaslamp District.

Fans were on hand yesterday afternoon to catch a glimpse of the popular host, as well as his guests, Lord of the Rings 'Frodo Bagans' Elijah Woods and The Talking Dead's/Nerdist geek extraordinaire, Chris Hardwick, who has made being a nerd a cool thing!  This marks the beginning of a slew of headliners headed to participate in this much-awaited event, including the casts of The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and the Hunger Games.

I was able to bear witness to the quirky, doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously show and dedicated crew, who are the geniuses behind the scenes.  It was interesting to see the inner-workings of a late night talk show and exactly what it entails.  Believe me, they don't call it the "art of editing" for nothing!

First the audience was warmed up, with about ten people snagged to participate in a chance to win some swag.  Little did they know they'd be dancing to Sir Mixalot's hit "I Got Big Buts" and N'Sync's "Bye Bye Bye"!  It was hilarious!  Needless to say some of these Con-ers had some pretty risky moves!

As O'Brien took the stage, he was welcomed with a thunderous applause as fans rallied, clearly showing their love and support. Of course Conan's opening monologue was mostly Comic Con-centric and there were a couple of moments done throughout the show in classic Conan style! A surprise guest in the form of Seth Green arrived on the scene for a little  Star Wars duel (can you guess who won?) and Golem was up to his old tricks again, as Woods presented a "show and tell".

The audience was electric, eager to participate in a couple of "re-do's" including audio and a skit involving Shamu the Whale, for the sake of production! Though they asked us to stay a little longer, no one complained as Conan belted out a rendition of Radiohead's "Creep"! If that doesn't say Comic Con, I don't know what does! LOL

No Comic Con event is complete without a little swag!  Each member of the audience was given a SDCC Exclusive Pop Conan to add to their valuable collections.  In the end, I encourage everyone to take time and watch this special edition week of Conan O'Brien.

Check out a few highlights from Conan Live's first taping, July 8, 2015.

Be sure to follow this blog for lots of interviews over the weekend, including Wesley Snipes (The Player), Star Wars prop creators from McCune Masterworks, casts of The Walking Dead, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, Sex Drugs & Rock & Roll, Minority Report, Once Upon A Time, Outlander, Childhood End, Star Wars panel.  Interviews will be posted on the RHeart Network YT Channel.  Follow me on twitter: @RHeartRadio or @SleepyAddicts, on FB 'like' the RHeart Network FB page and on Instagram, RHeart Network.

**SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGES**

Interview: Leah McKendrick On Her Short Film & Movie 'Beyond Deceit' w/Josh Duhamel, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins

About a year ago, I fell in love with the hip web series Destroy the Alpha Gammas, starring Leah McKendrick who created, wrote, and produced the popular series about two feuding sororities.  Similar to FOX’s Glee, the series upped the stakes with the freedom of the net, able to give it a little more of an edgier feel.  Though the first was a colossal hit and was recently released in several other countries, the question as to whether there will be a season two remains to
This hasn’t stopped her from tackling several other projects, including her latest short film The Girl in the Green Dress, directed by Johanna Goldstein.  McKendrick, along with co-star Sara Fletcher, produced, wrote, and stars in the tragic story of two women who find themselves attracted to each other in the 1950s, a time when women were stifled by “picture perfect” expectations.
What inspired such an interesting interpretation of this era? McKendrick and Fletcher wanted to do a period piece that shows a different side to the Leave It To Beaver stereotypical shows of the 1950s.  McKendrick says, “A lot of women felt depression and sadness, weren’t free to talk about their feelings.  We thought wouldn’t it be cool to have two women explore a different connection?”
While things have changed quite a bit from the 1950s thanks to women’s right movement, among other advances, there is still a mindset that women aren’t equal to men. “A lot of girls are still treated like they are a little bit less important, that our dreams and feelings mean less,” McKendrick explains.  Her hope is that in 15-20 years we’ll look back at today and realize it was another “hard time in history, [with] women fighting for reproductive rights and that it will be so atrocious,” similar at how we look back at the 1950s.
In today’s society, there is such a huge amount of pressure put on young people to look a certain way or be what someone else expects them to be.  McKendrick hopes the film will send the message to people young and old that nomatter who or what you are, you’re unique, special. “Whatever you feel in your heart, whoever you are, that’s beautiful and should be celebrated.” She recalls reading a story about a teenage transgender girl who recently killed herself. “I feel horrible because she felt so alone.  If I could have had one conversation with her, I would have told her life would get easier; you will make friends in college in your twenties and thirties. You will find your group.”
Although society has progressed greatly from the 1950s, we are still very judgmental of people and ourselves. McKendrick believes this short film questions “is it a positive thing to create a society where you can’t be yourself because everyone has to fit into a certain mold?” One of things she hopes people will get from the story is to say “that’s a terrible life and I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody.”  She adds, “These two characters can’t be themselves, it’s a tragic story.”
Having done a webseries that typically runs 15-20 minutes in length, was it difficult to do a short film? McKendrick explains that Destroy the Alpha Gammas was a much bigger production, with a huge cast and crew.  For this film, she gathered a small, all-female crew, whom she trusted.  “It was like girl power all day on set.  I really sort of enjoy working with women (not that I don’t with men) because there is a certain unspoken understanding between women and the story is female driven.”  She adds that it’s important to pick a crew and director willing to go to war with you because making a film is all-consuming, no matter if it’s a webseries, short or feature film.
In writing the short, McKendrick and Fletcher wanted to make it a precise, tight story. Originally over twenty-five minutes long, they had their work cut out for them editing it down.  “We wanted to trim all the fat, have it move, flow well, and make it interesting.” Although writing the short was challenging, the biggest hurdle was creating a period piece, set in the 1950s.
Thankfully the set designer, Nicole Vardi, did her magic meticulously creating a 1950s home so one definitely feels like they are standing in a moment, back in time.  McKendrick had no idea how difficult it would be to do a period piece; however, Vardi was lucky enough to have access to Universal Studios, which allowed her to effectively hearken back to the era.
Like in Destroy the Alpha Gammas, McKendrick shows her talent for dance in a couple of scenes which catapults the audience into an emotional roller-coaster ride.
Choreographed by Justine Menter, founder of  ‘The Flirt Dancers’ in Los Angeles, McKendrick says she’s her “go to girl” whenever she does anything to do with dance. Menter’s choreography is incredible in the film.  In a beautifully artistic depiction,  we see Ann (Sara Fletcher) and Paige (McKendrick) go through the thrill of finding each other, then the pain of rejection.  Both are living lives they feel trapped in, married to husbands who see them as nothing more than housewives, with no minds of their own.  I felt like they were being controlled by their husbands, given an allowance, told how to dress, etc...in this stereotypical universe, unable to do what they were passionate about.  At one point Paige suggests she write a novel, which her husband immediately discounts.  Later we learn she's pregnant.  Ann's husband appears disinterested in anything she as to say, so both are trapped as well as stifled, in a very real way- physically and figuratively.  This film really makes you appreciate that while we still have issues in the 21st century, we have made progress.
Not only has McKendrick been working hard creating, producing, writing, and starring in a short film, but she just finished shooting her first big budget feature film, starring Josh Duhamel, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, and Julia Stiles!

The movie Beyond Deceit, created quite a buzz at the Cannes Film Festival in May, as one of the most anticipated films.  Set to be released next year, this is Shintaro Shimosawa’s (Writer, The Grudge, The Echo, The Grudge 2) debut as a director, as well as the first time Pacino and Hopkins have been together on screen.  McKendick describes it as a murder/mystery/thriller.  She explains it’s about a lawyer (Josh Duhamel), who’s boss (Pacino) assigns a case to take down a crooked pharmaceutical executive (Hopkins). Unfortunately, Duhamel’s character gets pulled into a murder investigation as a suspect! McKendrick’s character happens to see something she shouldn’t, so also gets entangled in the case.

With such Hollywood royalty in the film, what was it like working on the set?  McKendrick says that when stars are that famous, “it kind of doesn’t register that it’s happening [with me].”  Although one would think Pacino and Hopkins might be intimidating, larger than life, they were quite the opposite.  She found it amazing how Hopkins went around introducing himself to everyone on the set, shaking their hands.  “It was lovely.  Such a dream that still blows my mind and I can’t believe it”, McKendrick gushes about the experience.  Interestingly, she admits to being much more nervous around Stiles, than Hopkins or Pacino, being such a huge fan of hers.
While working with legends like Duhamel, Pacino, Hopkins, and Stiles, what was the one thing she learned from them, that she’ll continue to use throughout her career? McKendrick talks about how she was nervous to speak up or ask for help.  Luckily her co-star Duhamel “is so open and real, willing to try new things and taught me I can do that too.” She describes how Duhamel stepped in and showed her how to work out a scene. “I worked a lot with Josh and learned from him if he doesn’t understand how a scene is working, he’ll tell you and make it work.  It was so helpful because I was too scared to say anything.  Josh would work it and we’d ad lib. [I learned] that I don’t need to be afraid of this.” She adds that being on such a huge movie set like that, with legendary talent can be intimidating. However, her “job is to make it look real, not be a hired talking head.”
Since meeting McKendrick, watching her grow from webseries producer to film producer, it’s been interesting to see her progression up the ladder of success.  Obviously, most get into acting, producing, writing, or directing simply because they truly love it.  It’s their passion and they do whatever they can to continue their journey towards success. While some say it’s not realistic to aim for external rewards, that the goal is to be happy within yourself, McKendrick says to be hired as an actor is very validating.  “Being a producer/writer/singer/songwriter, I create work for myself because I go to auditions and may not fit what they’re looking for.  But to be hired as an actor, to be able to be on a huge set and do what I love, is super validating.”  She encourages actors to “fight for what you believe in and what you want to do, what you actually want and what will make you happy.  All it takes is one big opportunity to change your life.”
The Girl in the Green Dress recently premiered at a festival in Los Angeles and McKendrick hopes it will be released in a limited amount of theatres and/or festivals at some point. After finishing her first big budget feature film, she hopes to create her own and has a lot of projects coming up.
Whether working with legendary actors, creating her own series or films, with so much hard work and creativity, I have no doubt we’ll be seeing much more of this talented triple-threat in the future, Leah McKendrick.
